When the USSĀ ConstitutionĀ triumphed over the HMSĀ GuerriereĀ during the War of 1812, the battleship became an icon of the US Navy and was beloved by the citizens of the young nation. During the battle, cannonballs seemed to glance off the side of the ship, earning theĀ ConstitutionĀ its nickname: Old Ironsides.
This specimen is a piece of wood from Old Ironsides, recovered during restoration efforts in the 1920s. First appearing in the Fifth Edition, we're very excited to bring Old Ironsides to the store!
